British retiree faces murder trial in Murcia over wife's death
A 72-year-old British man, Michael John C, is on trial in Murcia for the murder of his wife Vanessa Elizabeth, who was found seriously injured outside their home in Camposol.
Michael John C, a 72-year-old British national, has been brought before a nine-person jury at the Provincial Court in Murcia on murder charges relating to the death of his 56-year-old wife, Vanessa Elizabeth, outside their home in the Camposol urbanisation near Mazarrón. The couple had been drinking at local pubs on the night of 4 December 2022 before returning to a newly occupied house, where prosecutors say an argument turned violent and the defendant repeatedly struck, kicked and restrained his wife, causing fatal injuries.
The defence disputes this narrative, arguing that Michael, who suffers from Buerger's disease, accidentally knocked his wife over while attempting to reverse a car on an unlit street while heavily intoxicated. Testimony from family members and Guardia Civil officers is set to begin, with the defendant expected to take the stand on 30 October. Prosecutors and a private prosecution are requesting a 25-year prison term, emphasizing the relationship and gender-based violence as aggravating circumstances.
