British thriller ‘Tip Toe’ starring Alan Cumming draws U.K. acclaim, heads to Starz

Russell T Davies’ new drama Tip Toe, starring Alan Cumming as gay bar owner Leo and David Morrissey as his hostile neighbour Clive, aired on Channel 4 and attracted close to 6 million viewers in its first month. The series follows the events leading to Leo’s hanging, using a thriller framework to examine escalating homophobia and hate-crime violence in Britain. Davies said the story emerged from a long-standing idea about neighbourly keys and reflects his fear of online hate spilling into real life.
Cumming called the role his most intense in years, while Morrissey highlighted the importance of telling such a story. Produced on a shoestring budget with no U.S. co-production, the programme was sold worldwide and will debut on Starz in the United States on October 2, amid renewed public attention to anti-gay hate crimes.
