British TikTok star faces death sentence in Dubai amid claims of harsh detention
British influencer Brooke George, charged with murdering her boyfriend in Dubai, is awaiting a death-penalty trial while being held in the notorious Bur Dubai police station, where her family says conditions are harming her mental health.
British TikTok influencer Brooke George, 23, was taken into custody at Dubai International Airport following the June stabbing death of her 26-year-old boyfriend William Treeby. George alleges she acted in self-defence after Treeby became violent when she tried to leave the apartment. Charged with murder, she is being held at the Bur Dubai police station, a detention centre known for its stark lighting, constant infant cries and frequent interruptions to phone calls, according to her mother Tess.
The facility’s environment, described as mentally taxing, has reportedly worsened George’s condition, with her family noting sleeplessness and limited contact. Her detention was prolonged to October 28 after a court session on October 7 was postponed due to absent prosecution witnesses. Human-rights campaigner Radha Stirling, supporting the family, says the centre is unsuitable for prolonged incarceration and urges humane treatment while the case proceeds.
