British tourist dies and fellow Brit injured in Malta parasailing crash

A 59-year-old British man was killed and a 60-year-old British woman seriously injured when strong winds swept their parasail off Malta’s coast near St Julian’s.

On September 19, a 59-year-old British man and a 60-year-old British woman were parasailing off the coast of St Julian’s, Malta, when strong gusts ripped the sail from their boat about a mile and a half out to sea. Witnesses saw them plunge into the water at around 1 p.m., prompting police to dispatch a rescue boat. The man was declared dead at the scene, while the woman was flown to Mater Dei Hospital, where she remains in serious condition.

Magistrate Renata Farrugia is heading an official inquiry, and police investigations are ongoing. Parasailing, a sport that draws millions worldwide, has recorded over 1,200 accidents in the past three decades, according to the Parasail Safety Council. This crash echoes a recent fatal parasailing incident in Benidorm involving another British tourist.
