British travelers face heightened danger on airlines still using Russian airspace
Officials warn that flights over Russia remain unsafe for UK passengers, as some Chinese and Gulf carriers continue to use the route despite increased sabotage threats.
Zelensky told airlines and insurers that the Russian sky is becoming "completely dangerous" as Ukraine steps up drone strikes and other sabotage operations. Although the UK government permits flights over conflict zones after individual risk assessments, Russian airspace has been closed to carriers from the UK, EU, US and Canada since 2022. Nonetheless, flight-tracking data show at least a dozen airlines—including nine Chinese carriers, two Uzbek airlines and Pakistan International Airlines—still overfly Russia on routes to or from Britain.
Experts warn that heightened military activity, drone incursions and electronic interference increase the chance of civilian aircraft being caught in crossfire, even if direct attacks on passenger planes remain unlikely. The International Air Transport Association reiterated the need for timely intelligence, while airlines such as Hainan Airlines claim to have alternative routes ready. Passengers are advised to follow official guidance and stay alert to possible disruptions.
