British troops assess pros and cons of aerial and ground drones in desert drills
During a US-led exercise in the Mojave Desert, British soldiers evaluated the performance and limitations of both aerial and ground-based unmanned systems.
At a large US-organized training event in the Mojave Desert, British forces examined how aerial and ground drones perform in harsh desert conditions. The 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment and the incoming experimentation unit, the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, tested a range of UAVs and UGVs to determine optimal roles for reconnaissance, logistics and breaching tasks. Soldiers reported that ground robots must be affordable enough to be treated as consumables, while aerial drones face challenges with range, battery endurance and maintaining continuous coverage.
Connectivity problems and electronic-warfare interference also limited operational effectiveness. The findings will inform the British Army’s separate testing pathways—formal trials for acquisition and experimental trials for specific use cases. Officials stressed the importance of fielding drones in sufficient quantities to function like ammunition in sustained combat.
