British volunteer Finn Joughin deported after settler kidnapping in West Bank
Finn Joughin, a 22-year-old British activist, was expelled from Israel following his arrest after being seized by settlers in Umm al-Khair.
While volunteering with Proactive Presence in the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair, Finn Joughin intervened to protect Palestinian youths playing football and was seized by Israeli settlers at gunpoint. The settlers detained him for about half an hour before Israeli forces arrived, after which he was taken to a police station in Kiryat Arba and later to a magistrate’s court in occupied Jerusalem. Authorities investigated him for alleged assault, but a higher authority ordered his detention to end in deportation rather than prosecution.
Joughin was escorted to an immigration detention centre near Ben Gurion Airport, questioned about his presence in the West Bank, and ultimately expelled on August 31, barred from returning for ten years. He said he remains proud of his work and hopes to clear his name and possibly return in the future. The incident highlights ongoing settler attacks on Palestinian communities in Area C, where the West Bank remains under Israeli control.
