Broadcasters Team Up with Global Streamers as TV-Streamer Divide Crumbles

French broadcaster TF1 is placing its TF1+ service on Netflix, signaling a swift move toward collaboration between traditional broadcasters and streaming platforms.

During the Lumière Summit, TF1 announced that its TF1+ AVOD service will be carried on Netflix, a step intended to reach the platform’s roughly 14 million French users as linear TV viewership and ad revenue decline. President Rodolphe Belmer explained that the partnership helps amortize content costs and broaden advertising reach, with early data showing less than 10 % cannibalisation of TF1+ audiences. Panelists including Prime Video’s Andrew Bennett, Globo CEO Paulo Marinho and Gaumont Television’s Isabelle Degeorges explored how European broadcasters are increasingly joining forces with global streamers to fund local productions, retain ad control, and exploit audience data.

Bennett stressed that aggregation across SVOD, TVOD and free-to-air is core to Amazon’s model, while Marinho signaled openness to future window-sharing and ad-revenue arrangements. Degeorges warned that producers must keep IP rights to protect the European creative ecosystem, and all speakers called for regulation of platforms like YouTube that profit from French content without comparable investment obligations.
