Bronx off-duty NYPD detective attacked in daylight slashing; two suspects identified
An off-duty NYPD detective was slashed multiple times during a daylight robbery in the Bronx, and police have identified the two suspects involved.
While searching his vehicle on Rochambeau Avenue and East 208th Street in Norwood, off-duty Detective Jose Mercedes was confronted by two men on an e-bike who tried to snatch his gold chain. Mercedes fought back but was cut seven times as the assailants fled, leaving him bleeding on the sidewalk. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center and remains in stable condition.
Police released surveillance images showing the driver speeding on the sidewalk and the passenger, shirtless, behind him. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Sneider Mejia, an illegal alien with a pending ICE detainer, and the passenger as 25-year-old D’Angelo Caraballo, who has prior arrests for menacing and a gun possession charge. Both men are now subjects of a manhunt. Family members visited Mercedes in the hospital, and city officials, including the mayor and NYPD commissioner, also paid a visit.
