Brooklyn councilwoman asks Trump to prolong TPS for Ukrainian residents

Councilmember Inna Vernikov has written to Donald Trump urging an extension of Temporary Protected Status for about 100,000 Ukrainians living in the United States before the current deadline.

Inna Vernikov, a Brooklyn City Council member, sent a letter to Donald Trump requesting that the Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainian nationals be prolonged for another 18 months or until conditions no longer justify the designation. She notes that the current TPS for Ukraine expires on October 19 and points to the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure as evidence that returning is unsafe. Vernikov highlighted that the Ukrainian community of roughly 100,000 people in the U.S. is employed, pays taxes, and supports local businesses, arguing they should not be forced to choose between staying and losing legal work permission.

She described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a terrorist intent on destroying democracy. While Trump recently ended TPS for other groups, the administration, including the White House and the Department of Homeland Security, is still reviewing Vernikov’s appeal before making a decision.

Why it matters

The request could affect the legal status of tens of thousands of Ukrainian immigrants amid an ongoing war.
