Brother of chief prosecutor nominee reveals pre-election knowledge of Orbán-ordered raid

In a filing by Horváth Lóránt Law Firm, Szathmáry István acknowledged that he was aware before the parliamentary election that Orbán Viktor had personally ordered the raid on Hajdú János in the controversial Aranykonvoj affair, but he only informed the capital prosecutor’s office after obtaining investigative documents. The meeting with prosecutors took place at the Alkotmányvédelmi Hivatal, where Szathmáry reiterated his knowledge of the direct order.

He also referenced earlier investigations launched by the former Interior Ministry and a committee that met with former security state secretary Farkas Örs. Hajdú János, a former police lieutenant colonel, has been accused of illegal detention. The revelation comes as the parliament prepares to vote on the appointment of a new chief prosecutor, a process complicated by the fact that Szathmáry’s brother is himself under investigation for alleged document falsification related to the same case. The Tisza-frakció is set to hold a secret ballot, and concerns about conflict of interest are influencing the debate.
