Brunei Sultan removes royal titles from daughter-in-law over alleged misconduct
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah stripped Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah of all royal titles after she was said to have behaved in a manner deemed unsuitable for the royal family.
According to an announcement from the Office of the Grand Chamberlain, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ordered the removal of all royal titles from Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah, describing her behavior as unsuitable for a member of the royal household. The statement, relayed by RTB News, did not disclose the exact actions that prompted the sanction. Pengiran, 33, married Prince Abdul Malik in a ten-day palace ceremony in 2015 and is mother to four daughters: Princess Muthee’ah, Princess Fathiyyah, Princess Khaalishah and Princess Nabeelah.
While her titles were withdrawn, the titles of her children remain intact. The Sultan, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, also holds the prime-ministerial post and has previously attracted global criticism for supporting harsh penalties for gay sex and adultery. The revocation underscores the strict expectations placed on members of Brunei’s royal family.
