Brush fire near Getty Center chokes 405 freeway during rush hour
A brush fire erupted near the Getty Center in Brent Briggs, sending smoke over the 405 freeway and prompting a large firefighting response.
Around 4:15 p.m., a brush fire broke out on the hills above the northbound lanes of Interstate 405 near Getty Center Drive in Brentwood. Named the Getty Fire, the blaze consumed roughly five acres of dense vegetation, prompting the Los Angeles Fire Department to call in hand crews, ten additional engines, and aerial support. Thick smoke drifted over the freeway, turning the afternoon commute into a gridlock nightmare.
Authorities issued evacuation warnings for zones LFD-0895 and LFD-0967, but reported that no buildings were at risk. The origin of the fire is still under investigation and, so far, no injuries have been recorded.
Why it matters
The fire disrupted a major commuter corridor, highlighting wildfire risks in urban fringe areas.
