Buc-ee’s sues Beavercreek mini-mart over beaver logo, sparking statewide boycott

Texas-based Buc-ee’s filed a federal trademark suit against Beaver’s Mini Mart in Ohio, claiming the shop’s beaver emblem infringes on its own mascot, prompting local backlash and a boycott.

Buc-ee’s, the Texas convenience-store chain, sued Beaver’s Mini Mart in an Ohio federal court, arguing the mini-mart’s beaver logo infringes on its own buck-toothed beaver trademark. The case, filed four months after Buc-ee’s opened its first Ohio location near Dayton, has ignited a boycott campaign and social-media outcry, with the hashtag #boycottbucees trending. Beavercreek’s city council responded by passing a resolution that makes the beaver an official part of the town’s 200-year history, while local bakeries are selling beaver-themed cookies to fund the small business’s legal fees.

Comedian John Oliver highlighted the dispute on his show, and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called the lawsuit “absurd.” The dispute follows earlier Buc-ee’s trademark actions against other regional businesses, such as a moose-logo gas station chain.

Why it matters

The case illustrates how aggressive trademark enforcement can affect small local businesses and stir community backlash.
