Bucharest begins safety work on Rahova block damaged by 2025 explosion

The Bucharest City Hall confirmed that safety measures on the Rahova residential block, heavily impacted by a 2025 explosion, will begin shortly. Almost 500 support columns, known locally as “popi,” have been brought to the site for the initial stabilization stage. A recent coordination meeting with the investigating prosecutor and the chief police commissioner finalized the operational timeline.

Workers will be equipped with body-cameras, uploading footage every two and a half hours, while a crane and a large cutting device will dismantle the upper stories from the top down. Access to apartments above the fifth floor will be blocked, with controlled demolition allowing residents to retrieve documents and small personal items under supervision. The municipality pledged ongoing communication with affected tenants throughout the process.
