Bucharest Court to Hear DIICOT Appeal Over Release of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu

The Bucharest Court of Appeal is set to review DIICOT prosecutors' objection to the Tribunal's ruling that released former presidential hopeful Călin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen under judicial control. The original decision imposed a 60-day control period, requiring the defendants to appear before investigators or the court whenever called and to notify authorities of any change of residence. DIICOT argues that the two attempted to evade the investigation and has asked the appellate court to impose a 30-day preventive detention instead.

Supporters gathered outside the Tribunal, chanting slogans in favor of Georgescu. The case stems from a complaint filed by businessman Răzvan Leu, who alleges financial loss after a promised external financing fell through, prompting the criminal investigation into alleged fraud and organized crime.
