Bucharest launches safety and conservation work on historic Curtea Veche

Bucharest’s municipal government announced the start of a safety and conservation phase for Curtea Veche, the city’s earliest surviving medieval complex. The initiative, budgeted at about two million lei, is expected to finish within three months and will focus on repairing roofs, protecting walls and arches, and building a provisional roof to enable ongoing archaeological investigations. It comes after a 2018 project was halted in 2020 without any preservation measures.

Once the protective work is complete, a comprehensive restoration of the site—once a residence of voivodes like Vlad Țepeș, Mihai Viteazul, Matei Basarab and Constantin Brâncoveanu—will begin. The municipality emphasized the complex’s significance to Bucharest’s identity, noting that a museum operated there until 2015. The temporary measures aim to halt further decay while scholars continue to study the historic monument.
