Bucharest to receive grant for new trams, trolleybuses and electric buses

Mayor Ciprian Ciucu announced that Bucharest will obtain non-repayable funding from the Modernisation Fund to purchase modern tram, trolleybus and electric bus fleets.

Ciprian Ciucu disclosed that Bucharest will be allocated non-repayable money from the Modernisation Fund to overhaul its public-transport fleet. The plan calls for new trams to replace the old V3A(M) models, a fresh set of trolleybuses to succeed the Astra Ikarus units, and a series of electric buses to retire the diesel Mercedes-Benz Citaro Euro 3 vehicles. The European Investment Bank has identified the investment as a priority for the city.

Ciucu stressed that installing charging stations is essential for the electric buses to run efficiently immediately. He thanked Răzvan Mitu, the general councilor, Andrei Dinculescu, STB’s director, and officials from the Ministry of Transport for their involvement.

Why it matters

The funding will modernize Bucharest’s transit, improve air quality and reduce reliance on diesel vehicles.
