Budapest to restart Diákváros student housing project along Soroksár Danube branch

Transport and Investment Minister Vitézy Dávid announced the revival of the Diákváros student-city development on the Soroksár arm of the Danube, in cooperation with the city and Ferencváros.

The Fővárosi Közfejlesztések Tanácsa, in partnership with Ferencváros, approved the restart of the Diákváros student-city construction along the Soroksár branch of the Danube, as announced by Transport and Investment Minister Vitézy Dávid on Facebook. Responsibility for project preparation now lies with his ministry, and the state will jointly coordinate construction with the 9th district and the capital’s authorities.

The development will be integrated with the Wekerle Lakásépítési Program and will draw on European Union financing. The Orbán administration had previously suspended the scheme and transferred the riverside land to a foundation that supports China’s Fudan University; the dissolution of public-asset foundations has returned the parcel to municipal ownership. The new plan envisions residential blocks and dormitories intended to alleviate Budapest’s acute housing shortage.

Why it matters

Reviving the project could help ease Budapest's severe housing shortage by adding student residences.
