Budavár District Council Proposes Ban on Short-Term Rentals Starting 2028
The Budavár local government drafted a regulation to prohibit Airbnb-style rentals from 1 January 2028, following a resident poll.
The Budavár Önkormányzat announced a new regulatory draft that would eliminate short-term rentals in the Castle Hill neighbourhood of the I. district beginning 1 January 2028. The draft was created after a local poll in which 4,503 residents took part, and it reflects the community’s preferences. Under the plan, only apartments that already have a condominium’s consent may keep operating after 2028, and the council intends to introduce tighter inspections and substantial fines for breaches.
Existing registered short-term rentals are permitted to operate until the end of 2027 as a transition period. The council will accept comments on the draft for fifteen days and expects the district assembly to decide on the final rules in November.
Why it matters
The rule could reshape tourism housing and affect property owners in Budapest’s historic district.
