Budget 2027 boosts cash aid and voucher scheme for nine million Malaysians

The 2027 budget allocates RM16 billion to the STR cash grant and SARA voucher program, allowing nine million recipients to receive up to RM150 a month.

During the Oct 9 budget session, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM16 billion allocation for the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) cash assistance and the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) voucher scheme. The boost enables nine million STR recipients to claim SARA vouchers of up to RM150 per month, or RM1,800 annually. Beneficiaries like 42-year-old Nor Azura Ismail and 23-year-old Muhammad Azham Zailani reported that the additional funds help cover essential items such as rice, cooking oil and eggs.

The budget also widens SARA’s reach to 216 tamu farmer markets operated by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, offering more fresh-produce choices. Civil servant Mashitah Zakiah Abdul Rahman said the assistance has been vital for managing daily expenses after moving into rented accommodation. Recipients receive STR cash directly, while SARA credits are loaded onto their MyKad for use at participating retailers.
