Budget 2027 earmarks RM1.7 billion to boost BSN's microfinance outreach
The 2027 budget allocates RM1.7 billion to Bank Simpanan Nasional to expand financing for youth, gig workers, hawkers and vulnerable groups.
In the latest fiscal plan, the government has set aside RM1.7 billion for Bank Simpanan Nasional to deepen its microfinance activities across the country. Acting chief executive Mujibburrahman Abd Rashid highlighted that the money will support groups such as youth, gig-economy workers, hawkers and other vulnerable populations. An additional RM270 million is specifically intended to aid gig workers in expanding enterprises and achieving home-ownership goals.
BSN intends to leverage its nationwide branches, banking agents and mobile-banking platforms to improve access in rural and remote regions. The bank stresses that success will be measured by the impact on entrepreneurs' growth, income and financial stability, not merely the loan volume. Ongoing collaboration with the government is deemed essential to translate the budget measures into broader economic benefits for Malaysians.
Why it matters
The funding aims to broaden financial services for underserved Malaysians, potentially boosting small-business growth and economic inclusion.
