Budget 2027 introduces higher minimum wage and housing aid for urban Malaysians
The 2027 budget proposes raising the minimum wage to RM2,000 for large firms and expands housing credit guarantees, aiming to ease pressures on urban households.
Budget 2027 seeks to alleviate the financial strain on Malaysia's urban middle and lower-income groups through a suite of wage, housing, and social-protection initiatives. From June 2027, firms earning more than RM50 million annually must adopt a RM2,000 minimum wage, affecting over four million employees, and a RM2,500 entry-level pay is recommended for graduates and semi-skilled jobs. The Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme will guarantee RM20 billion in loans for 80,000 first-time homebuyers, while Bank Simpanan Nasional and Agrobank will provide RM270 million to help gig workers start businesses and purchase homes.
Food affordability is addressed by allowing the SARA programme to buy fresh produce at FAMA markets and boosting funding for Jualan Rahmah and Agro MADANI. Commuters can save up to RM160 a month through MyKomuter50, first homes up to RM500,000 are exempt from stamp duty, and the Medi Asas medical insurance plan complements existing social security schemes. SEAFIC chairman Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz emphasized that effective implementation could showcase Malaysia's balanced economic growth and household support.
Why it matters
The budget's wage and housing measures could significantly improve living standards for millions of urban Malaysians.
