Bukele and Palestinian activist nominated for Sacharov Prize by rival political groups
President Nayib Bukele and Palestinian activist Hussam Abu Safiya have both been put forward for the Sacharov Prize by opposing political factions.
The 45-year-old Bukele, a close ally of Donald Trump, was nominated by the ESN group, which is dominated by Germany's far-right AFD. In contrast, the Palestinian poet Hussam Abu Safiya received a nomination from left-wing parties and the Greens in parliament. Additional nominees include the International Criminal Court, Iranian activists Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, the peace movement Standing Together, and Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu. The final decision will be made by the parliamentary group leader.
Why it matters
