Bulgarian businessman and former MEP Slavi Binev killed in Sofia shooting

Slavi Binev, a prominent Bulgarian entrepreneur and former European Parliament member, was found dead from gunshot wounds at his Pavlovo home in Sofia on Saturday morning.

Slavi Binev, known for his business ventures and past tenure as a Member of the European Parliament, was shot dead at his Pavlovo residence in Sofia on Saturday morning. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 10:30 a.m.; an ambulance reached the scene within seven minutes but could only verify the fatality. A staff member who heard several gunshots entered the property, found Binev deceased, and raised the alarm.

The Ministry of Interior opened a dedicated investigation, seeking a suspect SUV believed to have been used by the assailants. Sources suggest the attack may have stemmed from a personal conflict with individuals present at the house. Police have reportedly detained some suspects, though no official confirmation of identities or motives has been released, and forensic teams continue to examine the crime scene.

Why it matters

The killing of a high-profile politician and businessman could destabilize local politics and raise concerns about organized-crime influence in Bulgaria.
