Bulletin chief warns world has ignored North Korea's nuclear danger
Alexandra Bell, head of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said the international community has neglected the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear program.
At a press event in Seoul, Alexandra Bell, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, warned that the world has largely forgotten the nuclear threat from North Korea, calling it a major open wound in the non-proliferation system. She highlighted that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, from which Pyongyang withdrew in 2003, remains undermined. Bell argued that technical and scientific capabilities to monitor any future agreement are already available, but lasting diplomatic effort is essential.
She referenced the limited outcomes of the Trump-Kim meetings and suggested that renewed dialogue must empower diplomats, military experts and scientists. The remarks were made on the sidelines of the 2026 Peace BAR Festival and the second Miwon Peace Prize ceremony at Kyung Hee University, where the Bulletin received the award.
Why it matters
Neglecting North Korea's nuclear program risks destabilizing global non-proliferation efforts and security.
