Bumble removes gender rule, lets any match start the conversation

Bumble announced a overhaul of its chat rules, discarding the long-standing requirement that women send the first message. Under the new policy, any matched user, regardless of gender, may start the conversation, though the chat will not open until the other party replies within a 72-hour period. To improve conversation quality, the app will detect one-word attempts and suggest more substantive openings.

The shift builds on prior options such as "Opening Moves" for heterosexual matches and earlier expansions for nonbinary connections. Bumble says the adjustment aims to give users greater confidence in choosing when to begin talks. The rollout begins today, August 11, alongside other AI-focused initiatives the company is pursuing.
