Bundesrat adopts most recommendations on F-35 procurement controversy

The Swiss Bundesrat accepted six of seven proposals from the parliamentary oversight body concerning the troubled F-35 fighter jet purchase and rejected claims that the contracts were barely examined.

In response to the parliamentary oversight committee's report on the F-35 acquisition, the Swiss Bundesrat approved six out of seven of its recommendations, aiming to improve transparency and risk management in future arms deals. The council refuted allegations that the US contracts were scarcely reviewed, noting that several Armasuisse specialists and officials from the defence department had studied the documents comprehensively.

The oversight body had earlier criticized the notion of a fixed price for the jets and pointed out that the allocated budget would only cover 30 aircraft instead of the planned 36. Defence Minister Martin Pfister had previously acknowledged the funding gap. The Bundesrat also pledged to strengthen the legal service of Armasuisse and to make procurement processes more open.

Why it matters

The decision affects Switzerland's defence spending and future transparency in military procurement.
