Burglar sentenced to 18 years for killing 86-year-old during home robbery

Ashley Malcom received an 18-year prison term after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 86-year-old John Burke, who was attacked while defending his wife during a burglary in Hackney.

The Old Bailey sentenced 40-year-old Ashley Malcom to 18 years in prison, with an additional five years on extended licence, for the death of John Burke. Burke, aged 86, was assaulted while trying to protect his 91-year-old wife Peggy during a nighttime break-in on Fountayne Road in Hackney, east London. After the attack, Malcom entered a nearby care home and attempted another burglary before being apprehended.
