Burnham calls for evidence-based debate on EU free-movement options

Prime Minister Burnham says the UK must hold a factual discussion about re-joining the EU single market, which would require freedom of movement.

In an interview with one outlet, Prime Minister Burnham urged a data-driven conversation about the United Kingdom’s next steps with the European Union, even suggesting a return to full membership or a single-market deal that would bring back free movement. He noted that Labour’s 2024 election platform explicitly blocks any such change until after the next general election. Burnham contrasted the younger, temporary migrants of the pre-Brexit era with today’s more complex migration pressures, saying the balance has altered.

He reiterated his past criticism of free movement’s difficulties but stressed the need for an honest assessment. The prime minister also made clear he would never support adopting the euro or joining the Schengen border-free zone. He plans to outline these options to the public at the upcoming summit.

Why it matters

The debate could reshape the UK’s economic ties and migration policy with the EU.
