Burnham Signals Possible EU Re-entry Pledge in Future Labour Manifesto

At the Labour Party conference, new leader Andy Burnham condemned Brexit as causing a decade of division and promised to outline options around a November UK-EU summit. He told ITV that if public opinion points toward re-entry, he could embed a commitment to a vote on the issue in the next manifesto, and he did not rule out bypassing a referendum or campaigning on a re-join promise. Burnham stressed the importance of a realistic, viable approach and warned that referendums can fracture households.

He reiterated his instinct that closer ties with the EU are preferable given global threats. While refusing to pledge a specific path, he left open the possibility of a post-election referendum. European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron and Pedro Sanchez welcomed the prospect, with Macron calling it “very good news” and Sanchez saying Spain would welcome the UK back.
