Bus collides with rail bridge pillar in Port Adelaide, driver and passenger injured
A Adelaide Metro bus struck a concrete support on a rail bridge in Port Adelaide, trapping the driver and a passenger who were later taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Emergency crews responded to a collision between an Adelaide Metro bus and a concrete rail bridge support on Commercial Road in Port Adelaide shortly before 9 a.m. The impact forced the bus onto the pillar, trapping the driver, a 37-year-old man from Kensington Park, and a 28-year-old female passenger. Both were treated at the scene, including blood transfusions for the driver, before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious but stable conditions.
Metropolitan Fire Service firefighters, including a specialist technical rescue team, worked for about half an hour to extract the passenger and more than an hour to free the driver, using hydraulic tools and removing the steering column. Four other passengers managed to exit the bus unaided. The bridge will be inspected by a structural engineer before train services resume, and SA Police are investigating while traffic restrictions remain.
