BYD Keeps Global Lead in EV Sales, Extends Advantage Over Tesla

Chinese automaker BYD remains the world’s top seller of fully electric cars, outpacing Tesla in the first nine months of 2026.

In the first three quarters of 2026, BYD solidified its position as the leading global seller of fully electric vehicles, selling roughly 305,000 more units than Tesla in the same period. While BYD’s overall vehicle deliveries dropped compared with the prior year, the decline is attributed to intense domestic price competition, which accounts for about 60% of its registrations. The firm’s international sales now represent 40% of its total volume, up about 19.3 percentage points from the same timeframe in 2025.

Tesla, led by Elon Musk, achieved its best three-quarter sales to date with 1,324,681 EVs delivered, marking a 6.1% year-over-year rise, yet it remains behind BYD in total sales. The Chinese automaker’s electric-only models now make up more than half of its global revenue, while the remaining 48% comes from plug-in hybrids. Geely ranked third, delivering over 800,000 EVs and targeting 3.45 million total vehicle sales for the full year.
