Cabinet proposes replacing Indira Gandhi names with generic 'PM' on pension schemes
The Union Cabinet is considering renaming three pension schemes and the National Social Assistance Programme, swapping the Indira Gandhi prefix for 'PM'.
The Union Cabinet has opened discussion on a plan to rebrand a set of social welfare programs that honor former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Under the proposal, the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, and the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme would be renamed to the PM National Old Age Pension Scheme, PM National Widow Pension Scheme, and PM National Disability Pension Scheme respectively.
The National Social Assistance Programme, administered by the Rural Development Ministry, would also receive a new title, PM Shayata Yojna. Officials indicated the move seeks a uniform naming convention across central schemes. No timeline for implementation was provided, and the proposal is now pending further cabinet approval. The discussion took place in New Delhi.
Why it matters
