Cabinet Secretary Benhur Abalos endorses five-year terms for barangay and SK officials
Cabinet Secretary Benhur Abalos said a five-year tenure for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan leaders would allow more work time and lessen community political splits.
Speaking in Cebu, Benhur Abalos argued that extending the term of barangay and SK officials to five years would give local officials a longer horizon to implement projects. He noted that fewer election cycles could reduce recurring political tensions in neighborhoods. The comments came shortly after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act No. 12326, which formalises the five-year term and pushes the next barangay and SK elections to November 2028.
