Cabinet to Review raise of productivity-linked bonus for railway staff

The Union Cabinet is set to discuss a proposal to increase the productivity-linked bonus for non-gazetted railway employees on Wednesday.

On Wednesday the Union Cabinet is expected to examine a plan to adjust the productivity-linked bonus (PLB) for non-gazetted railway workers. At present the bonus is based on a Rs 7,000 wage ceiling and 78 days of wages, yielding Rs 17,951 per employee. The Indian Railways Technical Supervisors' Association has petitioned for the ceiling to be raised to Rs 18,000 with dearness allowance for Level-2 staff and above, reflecting higher salary scales.

The Cabinet's review does not confirm that the bonus will be approved or indicate the final figure. The Railway Board recently cautioned staff about a forged document that claimed a Rs 41,149 bonus for the 2025-26 fiscal year, urging verification through official channels. No further details of the proposal were released at the time of reporting.

Why it matters

Railway workers' earnings could rise if the bonus ceiling is increased, affecting millions of public-sector employees.
