Cadillac F1 Team Refutes Sale Speculation Amid Federal Probe of Owner

Cadillac F1 and its partner TWG Global denied any plans to sell the team as U.S. authorities investigate billionaire Mark Walter's financial network.

As the Formula 1 season resumes at Zandvoort, the focus shifted off the track to a federal inquiry into billionaire Mark Walter’s extensive financial holdings. TWG Global, the co-owner of the Cadillac F1 team with General Motors, released a statement before the Dutch Grand Prix asserting that it is not considering a sale of the Cadillac team or any other TWG Motorsport assets. The clarification follows a probe into billions of dollars of related-party private-credit transactions involving Walter’s insurance network, with Manhattan prosecutors and the SEC examining four intermediary entities.

The investigation centers on complex loans between Walter-linked firms and two life-insurance subsidiaries, Delaware Life and Clear Spring Life and Annuity, both part of Group 1001, a TWG subsidiary since 2024. Legal findings could reverberate across TWG’s holdings, which include Andretti Global’s IndyCar and Formula E entries, Wayne Taylor Racing in IMSA, and Spire Motorsports in NASCAR. The rumors were sparked after Walter abruptly sold his stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, prompting speculation about the stability of his other sports investments such as Chelsea FC and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Why it matters

The investigation could destabilize a major motorsport portfolio and affect related sports franchises.
