Cairo to convene Palestinian factions for unity talks and election planning
Cairo will host meetings with the PLO, Hamas, PIJ and other Palestinian groups to discuss internal divisions, unity and future elections.
Cairo is scheduled to host a series of meetings that will bring together major Palestinian factions, including the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Over Wednesday and Thursday, the talks will focus on reconciling internal disputes, strengthening overall unity and preparing for upcoming elections. Abdel Fattah Dawla, speaking for Fatah, indicated the gatherings are intended to build a broader consensus among the groups.
The dialogue also reflects the recent decision by President Mahmoud Abbas to delay presidential and legislative elections by nearly a year, moving them to September 11 2027. The PLO cited adverse conditions in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, such as Israeli limits on election materials and restrictions on international observers, as reasons for the postponement. Organizers hope the Cairo sessions will generate a coordinated strategy to address these challenges and revive the Palestinian political process.
Why it matters
The talks could shape Palestinian political unity and influence the timing of future elections amid regional tensions.
