California Appeals Court Dismisses Jay-Z's Extortion and Defamation Claims Against Lawyer
A California appellate panel rejected Shawn Carter's attempt to revive his extortion and defamation suit against Houston attorney Tony Buzbee.
A three-judge panel of the California Court of Appeal affirmed a lower-court ruling that barred Shawn Carter, known as Jay-Z, from pursuing his extortion and defamation lawsuit against Houston lawyer Tony Buzbee. The judges concluded the attorney’s demand letters, sent on behalf of unnamed clients alleging past rape, were part of a legitimate litigation strategy and therefore fell under the litigation privilege. Associate Justice Anne Richardson noted the record lacked proof that Buzbee knowingly spread false accusations.
The appellate ruling also upheld the anti-SLAPP dismissal of Carter’s defamation claims, which were based on vague social-media statements. After the decision, Buzbee announced plans to recover Carter’s legal fees. The case stems from broader controversies linking Buzbee to rumors about Sean Combs and other celebrities.
