Eric Arzate, a 20-year-old fire cadet at the College of the Sequoias Fire Academy in Hanford, Central Valley, experienced an unexpected medical emergency during a training session on Aug. 10. Cadets on the scene provided assistance until paramedics arrived and escorted him to a local hospital, where he died the following day. Authorities have opened an inquiry into the unknown ailment that caused the collapse.
Arzate's family described him as selfless and dedicated, noting his long-standing ambition to join the firefighting profession and his volunteer work with local first-responder programs. They launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover memorial costs, which has so far collected more than $13,700 of a $30,000 target. The tragedy follows the death of his father, Raul, three years earlier, and the family finds solace in their shared love of music.
