California Governor signs bills to boost security for worship sites and nonprofit events
Governor Gavin Newsom approved two measures that create protected zones around places of worship and extend grant funding for nonprofit event security.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2664, the Safe Worship Zone Act, establishing a 100-foot perimeter around entrances and exits of houses of worship and banning unsolicited approaches within eight feet for literature distribution, protest, or intimidation. He also enacted AB 1836, broadening the State Nonprofit Security Grant Program to fund security at off-site events hosted by eligible nonprofits, including festivals, parades, and religious observances, with a maximum grant of $25,000.
Newsom stated that every Californian should feel safe entering a synagogue, church, mosque or similar venue. David Bocarsly, CEO of Jewish California, noted that communities gather not only behind doors but also in public spaces, and that rising hate-motivated violence makes security costs prohibitive. The new legislation aims to protect vulnerable groups and ensure community traditions can be practiced safely across the state.
