California Highway Patrol launches 78-hour DUI crackdown for Labor Day weekend
The California Highway Patrol announced a 78-hour enforcement period from Sept. 4 p.m. to Sept. 7 midnight to target impaired driving over the Labor Day holiday.
Starting at 6:01 p.m. on September 4 and ending at 11:59 p.m. on September 7, the California Highway Patrol will conduct a 78-hour Holiday Enforcement Period aimed at preventing alcohol- and drug-related crashes during the Labor Day weekend. The effort coincides with the nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that began on August 19. CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee and Traffic Group Commander Pasos both emphasized the need for drivers to plan alternative transportation and highlighted the potential for a single impaired-driving decision to cause fatal outcomes.
The state has posted a schedule of DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols in locations such as Florence Avenue, Pacific Coast Highway, and the Foothill Area. Data from the previous year’s enforcement showed more than 1,200 DUI arrests, nearly 500 crashes, over 270 injuries and eight deaths, underscoring the ongoing traffic safety challenge in California.
