Villegas has highlighted his scholarly work, including a 2022 American Political Science Association chapter that frames diversity, equity and inclusion as essential to community-college teaching and as a "social justice-driven duty."
He also cites his dissertation, which describes himself as a former community organizer and argues that activist engagement can strengthen research. Villegas has previously led the Central Valley Freedom Summer program, linking students with groups focused on LGBTQ rights, immigration, environmental justice and racial equity. The race is rated a "toss-up" with a razor-thin D+1 lean, making it a key target for Democrats seeking House control.
Republican critics, including a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, have portrayed Villegas as a far-left activist, while Democratic narratives stress the importance of DEI and grassroots involvement. Both campaigns have declined to comment on the accusations exchanged.
