California man acquitted by insanity defense after killing and dismembering his mother

A Ventura County man who killed and dismembered his mother in 2022 was found not guilty by reason of insanity and will be committed to a state mental hospital.

In Ventura County, authorities charged David Hoetzlein, 25, with the murder and dismemberment of his mother, Tomoko Hoetzlein, after her body was found in a dumpster near their apartment complex in 2022. Neighbors described the building as quiet, noting Hoetzlein often barricaded himself inside the unit before police intervened. The district attorney's office highlighted the victim's efforts to secure mental-health care for her son, including contacting his hospital and law enforcement.

Medical evaluations by two independent physicians concluded that Hoetzlein satisfied the statutory definition of legal insanity. Consequently, a jury returned a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, and he will be confined to a maximum-security state mental hospital, where he faces a potential life term of confinement.
