California parents charged with felony child neglect after 8-year-old's fatal asthma attack

Gabrielle Hanson and stepfather Jacob Randolph were charged with felony child neglect after their 8-year-old daughter Aurora died following an asthma attack in a San José home described as infested and unsanitary.

Aurora, an 8-year-old with asthma, experienced a serious attack on May 13 and her parents delayed seeking help for eight hours; she was hospitalized and died four days later. The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner classified the death as homicide, attributing it to lack of oxygen from severe asthma with acute lung injury and noting medical neglect as a significant factor. The home on Lancelot Lane in East San José was reported to be infested with cockroaches, filled with pet feces, garbage and mold, and housed seven children ranging from two months to 17 years.

County social workers and police had documented the unsanitary conditions since at least 2019, and detectives later found a dirty inhaler spacer and a mask with cockroaches, but no functional inhaler. Gabrielle Hanson and stepfather Jacob Randolph were charged with felony child neglect, arraigned without entering pleas, and released on supervised own recognizance with a no-contact order. Their brother Jonathan Hanson was also charged with sexual abuse involving another child in the house and for Gabrielle’s alleged knowledge of the abuse.
