California realtor arrested at LAX accused of spying on Taiwanese president’s son in Seattle

Federal investigators arrested 34‑year‑old Irvine realtor Wanying “Heather” Zhang at Los Angeles International Airport as she was about to depart for Shanghai. A criminal complaint accuses her of acting as an unregistered foreign agent and of surveilling Ting‑Yu Lai, the engineer son of Taiwan’s president, during a September 2025 trip to Seattle. Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s camera allegedly captured Zhang and an associate filming Lai, his wife and child at their residence. Investigators obtained WeChat messages from Zhang’s iCloud that they say show coordination with Chinese officials, and the pair used a rented vehicle to conduct the operation.
