California renters uncover hidden basement used by unknown occupant

Tenants of a Hemet rental property in Riverside County grew uneasy after hearing doors close and a persistent alarm while living there for about three months. The family, led by Charnita Matthews, followed the sounds to an unexpected spot beneath their backyard deck, where they lifted a wooden board and uncovered a large, previously hidden cellar. Inside they found cleaning chemicals, a fan drawing power from the home, and a tarp covering a black tube that appeared to contain drugs.

Matthews says she was never informed about the subterranean area when she signed the lease and that Pro Management has not replied to her concerns. The Hemet Police Department investigated the scene and instructed the family to call if anyone reappears in the space. Neighbors noted the house has had many tenants, some reportedly problematic, but no further incidents have been reported since the discovery.
