California voters view federal meddling as top election worry, poll shows

A recent UC Berkeley poll finds 61% of California voters consider possible Trump administration interference in the November midterms a major concern, outpacing worries about fraud or non-citizen voting.

According to a poll conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, 61% of California voters list potential interference by the Trump administration in the upcoming November elections as a major concern, slightly higher than the 59% who worry about foreign meddling. The study, which surveyed 4,207 registered voters online in English and Spanish, highlights a deep partisan divide: 80% of Democratic respondents see federal interference as a serious threat, compared with only 28% of Republicans.

Conversely, 84% of Republicans view voter fraud as a major issue, while just 21% of Democrats share that view, and 85% of Republicans are worried about non-citizen voting versus 12% of Democrats. Despite these anxieties, a strong majority—72%—approve of mail ballots, and 65% express confidence that local officials count votes accurately, though 53% note concerns about counting delays. The poll underscores California’s liberal tilt and the broader national debate over election security and perceived threats.

Why it matters

The findings illustrate how election-integrity fears differ across party lines, shaping voter attitudes ahead of the midterms.
