Calls Grow to Shut Queensland Greyhound Track After Two Dog Deaths in Three Days
Two greyhounds died at the Q1 track near Brisbane within three days, prompting renewed demands for the facility’s permanent closure.
In the past week, two greyhounds - Dainty Dottie and You Tell Her - died at the Q1 track, a facility marketed as the world’s safest but criticized as a “graveyard” for the animals. Since the first trial races in March, the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds reports a death toll of at least 40 and 1,492 injuries across the three-track complex in Purga, which opened at a cost of about $90 million. CPG president Amy McMahon highlighted that quarterly injury reports for January-June 2026 remain undisclosed and called on Racing Queensland and the state government for transparency.
Racing Minister Tim Mander affirmed that one outlet administration is ensuring animal-welfare standards, though he offered few specifics. Labor MP Jennifer Howard has pushed her party toward a greyhound ban, while similar concerns are echoed in New South Wales and New Zealand, where greyhound racing has been banned.
Why it matters
The deaths raise questions about animal welfare, public spending, and regulatory oversight of a high-cost racing complex.
