Cambridge Heartwear Secures £184 million NHS Deal for Reusable ECG Wearable

Cambridge Heartwear has been awarded a £184 million contract by the NHS to supply HeartSense, the first medical-grade, reusable ECG wearable.

Cambridge Heartwear secured a £184 million contract from the NHS Supply Chain to deliver HeartSense, the world’s first reusable, medical-grade ECG wearable that charges wirelessly and incorporates adaptive AI. Designed for both primary and secondary care, the device enables continuous, multi-channel heart monitoring via a mobile phone, helping patients and clinicians identify rhythm disorders before they lead to heart failure or stroke.

Manufactured in the UK and engineered at Cambridge Science Park, the system meets UKCA and ISO 13845 standards, with FDA 510(k) submissions underway. The rollout, managed through Integrated Care Boards, is intended to ease pressure on hospitals while expanding access to high-quality cardiac diagnostics in community settings. Founder Rameen Shakur said the deal demonstrates the potential of collaboration between clinicians, engineers and AI specialists to advance early diagnosis and prevention. The initiative marks a significant step for domestic ECG manufacturing and could reshape cardiac care across the NHS.

Why it matters

The deal introduces a novel, AI-driven cardiac monitor that could improve early diagnosis and reduce NHS strain.
